The Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors® (SAMS®) was established during the 1980’s by a small group of surveying professionals wishing to advance their craft. As such the society has evolved to develop it Codes of Ethics and Rules of Practices.

The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) is a non-profit, member organization that develops voluntary global safety standards for the design, construction, maintenance, and repair of recreational boats.

The Coast Guard Department is responsible for the patrolling of coastal areas and harbours, territorial seas, and other regional security system territorial seas for the purpose of law enforcement and search and rescue.
